
Prof. Pendo S. Mlay Biography
Professor Pendo Samwel Mlay is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College (KCMUCo), where he also earned his medical degrees. He currently serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at KCMUCo, playing a pivotal role in advancing medical education, clinical research, and health policy both within Tanzania and beyond. As Dean, he has been instrumental in the development of a harmonized Competency-Based Curriculum, now adopted by all medical schools in Tanzania, ensuring standardized and high- quality medical training across the country.
Before his appointment as Dean, Professor
Mlay served as the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for over a decade. With a deep commitment to improving women’s health and reducing maternal mortality in Tanzania, he has extensive experience in providing technical assistance in Reproductive, Maternal, and Newborn Health. He has contributed to the formulation of multiple national treatment guidelines, including the clinical practice guidelines on the appropriate use of uterotonics. A prolific researcher specializing in maternal and fetal medicine, Professor Mlay has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, furthering knowledge, and innovation in the field.
