
Dr. Barnabas Alayande
Dr. Barnabas Alayande, MBBS, PgDTh, MBA, MPH, FMCS, FCS-ECSA, FICS, FRRHHEd, FACS, is a general surgeon and Chair of the Centre for Equity in Global Surgery at the University of Global Health Equity. His work sits at the intersection of surgical education, health systems strengthening, and equity-driven innovation, with a focus on expanding access to safe, high-quality surgical care across sub-Saharan Africa. He brings a multidisciplinary background in medicine, academic global surgery, theology, and business, alongside specialist training in general surgery. His clinical and academic interests include trauma care, oncology care access in variable resource contexts, human factors in surgery, and context-adapted surgical training for variable resource settings. He has played a key role in surgical and surgical health professions education curriculum development in Rwanda, the design of non-technical skills training frameworks for variable-resource contexts, and regional capacity-building initiatives across East, Central, and West Africa. His research has been supported by institutions including the National Institutes of Health, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and the Association for Academic Surgery.
