
Prof. Lukoye Atwoli
Prof. Lukoye Atwoli is a leading psychiatrist, currently serving as Dean of the Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa, Deputy Director of the Brain and Mind Institute at AKU, and a practicing psychiatrist at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi. He holds a PhD from the University of Cape Town, where his research focused on trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As a member of the World Mental Health Surveys Consortium, Prof. Atwoli is widely published, with research interests in trauma and PTSD, genetics of mental disorders, child and youth mental health, and HIV-related mental health.
He holds prominent leadership roles, including Vice-President of the World Psychiatric Association Section on Epidemiology and Public Health, Chairperson of the Board of Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital, and Chair of the Association of Academic Health Centers International (AAHCI) Steering Committee. A strong mental health advocate, he has influenced policies globally, earning him honors such as the International Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (IDFAPA), the Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS), the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (M.B.S), and election to the US National Academy of Medicine. He is also a member of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences and the International President of the World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2026.
