Prof. Abebe Bekele

Abebe Bekele, MD, PhD, FCS (ECSA), FACS, FRCS(Edi), MAMSE, is Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and Research Affairs and Founding Dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) in Rwanda. A Full Professor of Surgery at UGHE, Addis Ababa University, University of Rwanda, and Duke University, he has over 26 years of experience in surgical and medical education. He is Secretary General of COSECSA, Editor-in-Chief of the East and Central Africa Journal of Surgery, and sits on editorial boards of JAMA Health Forum and BMC Medical Education. Ranked among Stanford-Elsevier's Global Top 2% Scientists, he has published over 140 articles and received numerous awards, including the 2024 CUGH Distinguished Leadership Award. He founded COMSA and PASHeF, and advises the WHO, Global Surgery Foundation, and Ethiopian Ministry of Health. His research focuses on trauma, surgical oncology, global surgery equity, and education.
