Prof. Abdulraheem O. Mahmoud

Abdulraheem Olarongbe Mahmoud, MD, had his early Western and Islamic education in his hometown, Ilorin, Nigeria. He completed his undergraduate medical training (MB;BS with distinctions) at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria in 1981. He had his 6-year long specialist fellowship residency training in Ophthalmology that was rounded off at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester, UK, in 1993. His sub-specialty training in vitreo-retina and laser surgery was obtained at the El-Maghraby Eye Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from mid-1995 to mid-1996. He subsequently obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in 2020. He has trained (and continues to train) generations of medical students and ophthalmic resident doctors, some of whom have risen to become full professors. He has successfully supervised the dissertations of 25 Fellows in Ophthalmology in the West African sub-region and was the External Assessor for 15 professorial elevations spread across 12 public universities in Nigeria. He was a member of the multi-disciplinary research team that established the efficacy of annual mass dosing with Ivermectin (Mectizan) drug which eliminated the blinding scourge of Onchocerciasis or River Blindness from the West African sub-region. He is a member of the American College of Ophthalmology and also a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (Nigerian Chapter). He is a member of the Consensus Ophthalmology Expert Committee that meet periodically at the Moorfield’s Eye Hospital in London to fashion subspecialty training in ophthalmic surgery for the West African sub-region. Having been certified AI-proficient, Prof Mahmoud has been enrolled as a foundation charter member of the National Association of AI practitioners in Nigeria in May 2024. His current research interest is on the use of Artificial Intelligence in enhancing medical practice, training and research including their ophthalmic components. He is currently employed as a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria and concurrently a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-retinal Surgeon at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Nigeria.
