
Dr. Reiye Esayas
Dr. Reiye Esayas Mengesha is an associate professor of surgery at Mekelle University’s College of Health Sciences, specializing in gastrointestinal (GI) and minimally invasive surgery. Renowned for his surgical expertise, he is deeply committed to medical education, mentoring both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees. As a researcher, he has authored numerous publications and actively contributes to national surgical societies, driving innovation in surgical techniques and practices.
During the 2020–2022 Tigray conflict and its aftermath, Dr. Reiye played a pivotal role in delivering critical surgical care while training medical students and residents under extraordinarily challenging conditions. His experience in managing complex patient cases and sustaining medical education during this humanitarian crisis has profoundly shaped his approach to surgery and training. These experiences have further solidified his resolve to advance healthcare accessibility and education, even in the most resource-constrained and adverse environments.
