
Dr. Dessalegn Melesse, PhD
Dr. Dessalegn Melesse is an expert in health system strengthening and data-driven innovations, advancing how big data and advanced analytics are leveraged to improve healthcare delivery. As an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba, he applies cutting-edge analytical methods and emerging technologies to optimize health data ecosystems and enhance policy-driven decision-making in LMICs, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. His work bridges research and implementation, equipping health systems with the tools to improve efficiency, equity, and impact.
As Principal Investigator of Gates Foundation-funded initiatives in Ethiopia, he leads real-time dashboard development and data-driven innovations to strengthen large health systems, improve health service utilization and data quality, and advance in-depth data analytics for capacity building across multiple sub-Saharan African countries. He also coordinates a global research supplement, collaborating with global experts, and Ethiopian universities and government bodies.
Committed to building local capacity, he developed a nationally accredited Health Data Analytics and Use CPD module for in-service training of health professionals and a three-tiered academic module, integrating machine learning, geospatial methods, and AI-powered solutions for predictive analytics into graduate education. A widely published researcher and educator, Dr. Melesse mentors emerging health leaders and PhD students to drive evidence-based health system advancements across Africa.
